Implementation of the Local Agricultural Innovation System, a governance instrument for local development

Abstract

Local agricultural innovation is key to fostering the development of the agricultural sector through its various programs, which contribute to municipal self-sufficiency to achieve local food security, sovereignty, and sustainability. The article aims to share experiences regarding local management in agricultural innovation based on the implementation of the Local Agricultural Innovation System, which contributed to food sustainability in the municipality of Cauto Cristo. The methodology supporting the execution of the Local Agricultural Innovation Project and the procedure for agricultural training through action learning was used. Work was carried out with learning groups in the planning and implementation of activities. The productive entities directly linked to the project and the trusted producers were identified, who, together with the government, the Municipal Agricultural Delegation, and the University Center, constituted a platform for the adequate management of the process. The main results were the strengthening of the bean, chickpea, and soybean production chains through the local management of innovation, with a recognized impact on seed production, and the creation of 11 enterprises with planned actions in the programs and projects that contribute to the Local Development Strategy, compatible with institutional agendas.
