Abstract

Mulberry is a forage plant with high protein content, but not all varieties respond in the same way to salinity conditions. The article evaluates the in vitro response of mulberry plants, Criolla, Yu-62, Doña Betty and Acorazonada varieties, in multiplication and rooting culture media with different values of electrical conductivity (0; 0,2; 0,4; 0,6; 0,8 and 1,0 dS.m-1). The research was carried out at the Center for the Study of Plant Biotechnology of the University of Granma. The results showed that the increase in sodium chloride concentrations affected the morphological response of the plants in the four genotypes evaluated; of these, the Acorazonada variety showed the greatest tolerance to this factor. It is concluded that salt stress induced with sodium chloride affects the leaf tissue of the four mulberry genotypes; the greatest affectation occurs at salinity levels equal to or higher than 0.8 dS.m-1 in the growing medium.
