Utilización de subproductos del tomate (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill) en la alimentación de pollos en ceba (Revisión)

Los principales problemas que enfrenta la industria animal mundial son la disponibilidad y el alto costo de los ingredientes de los piensos. Este requiere la búsqueda de fuentes de alimentos alternativas económicas. El objetivo de este trabajo fue caracterizar a los subproductos del procesamiento industrial del tomate (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.) para su utilización en la alimentación de pollos de ceba. Los subproductos agroindustriales, como portadores de energía y proteína, son importantes y prometedores en la búsqueda de alternativas sostenibles para la alimentación animal. El procesamiento del tomate produce una cantidad no despreciable de residuos entre el 2 y el 10 % del peso fresco del fruto. Estos residuos pueden contener entre un 22.1 y 22.4 % de proteína, 14.5 a 15.7 % de grasa, y 20.8 a 30.5 % de fibra, además vitaminas A, B1 y B2 y aminoácidos esenciales y no esenciales, favorables para incorporarse en las raciones de pollos de engorde sin ningún efecto adverso sobre el rendimiento, el crecimiento, la ganancia de peso corporal y la eficiencia económica. Un mayor uso de residuos de tomate secos en la formulación de dietas para pollos podría disminuir los costos en alimento y disminuir las consecuencias ambientales de su gestión y eliminación.
