Risk factors associated with chronic periodontitis in patients of the Edor de los Reyes Polyclinic, Jiguaní (Original)

Chronic periodontitis is a very common health problem in humans and knowledge of the risk factors that condition it is of vital importance to control the disease. This article presents a case-control study, with the objective of showing the association of some risk factors with the appearance of chronic periodontitis in 813 patients aged 35-56 years old who were attended in the first quarter of 2024 at the Edor de los Reyes Martínez Arias Polyclinic, belonging to Jiguaní municipality, Granma province. The sample was conformed by 186 patients, 62 cases and 124 controls, respectively. The cross-product ratio (Odds Ratio) was applied to determine the association between the main risk factors and chronic periodontitis, with a reliability of 95 % and a probability of 0,05. The most strongly associated risk factor was dentobacterial plaque, followed by smoking and diabetes mellitus, demonstrating the relationship between these factors and the disease.
