Anxiety and temporomandibular disorders: a brief approach to their study for a better quality of life
Keywords:

Anxiety and depression are closely related to the appearance and evolution of temporomandibular disorders. In particular, dental anxiety nowadays constitutes a psychopathological problem of high prevalence in Latin American and Caribbean countries, with importance in the dental area, particularly with temporomandibular disorders. The article analyzed the relationship between anxiety and temporomandibular disorders in order to promote strategies that contribute to achieve a better quality of life in people. Theoretical methods (analysis-synthesis and induction-deduction) and empirical methods (analysis and critique of sources as well as scientific observation) were used. Emphasis was placed on a group of psychological references for the diagnosis and treatment of temporomandibular disorders, as well as on the need to promote strategies for the prevention and management of anxiety. As a result, it was obtained that the bidirectional interaction anxiety-temporomandibular treatment generates a negative cycle if the treatment is not systematic; that the early identification of anxiety symptoms and their preventive treatment reduce the risk of developing temporomandibular disorders in predisposed individuals, which improves the quality of life and reduces the burden of oral and psychological disorders; the implementation of strategies for the treatment of anxiety associated with temporomandibular disorders requires the systemic integration of the multidisciplinary team for the diagnosis, orientation, treatment and evolution of patients.
