Strategy for the socio-humanistic training of medical students at the Military Hospital of Holguín

Abstract

Education in the socio-humanistic field for medical students is considered an urgent need in view of the current challenges of building a more equitable and inclusive society. The objective of this article is to propose a strategy that contributes to the socio-humanist education of medical students of the Military Hospital of the Army Dr. Fermín Valdés Domínguez, Cuba. A qualitative research was carried out, based on theoretical (historical-logical, analysis-synthesis and induction-deduction) and empirical (documentary analysis) methods. The choice of these methods allowed for a qualitative analysis and interpretation of the content presented, in addition to facilitating the application of the laws and principles of dialectical materialism, including the systemic structural-functional approach. In spite of the fact that the curricula of the medical career in Cuba have integrated in a transversal way socio-humanistic elements, the research shows that there are still deficiencies in their effective implementation. As a proposal to address this situation, a strategy was designed to strengthen socio-humanistic training in medical students, not only as a curricular requirement, but as an integral and formative process that influences all aspects of their professional and personal development.
