Allergic rhinitis in pediatric ages: Educational actions addressed to mothers (Original)

Rhinitis is a health problem that constitutes a reason for consultation in pediatrics and is associated with comorbidities such as asthma. The objective of this article is to evaluate the effectiveness of educational actions aimed at mothers of children from 5 to 14 years old with allergic rhinitis, in order to increase their level of knowledge on the subject. Theoretical, empirical and statistical research methods were used for this purpose. A quasi-experimental study was carried out, before and after type, without control group, where the mothers' level of knowledge about allergic rhinitis was evaluated. The universe was 185 mothers and the sample was 65 of them. To test the hypothesis and relationship between the qualitative variables, the Chi-square test was used; to compare the mean values of the quantitative variables, the Student's t-test was used and with the purpose of determining the variations in the level of knowledge before and after applying the educational actions, the Wilcoxon signed-rank test was used. The results showed that 70,77% of the cases investigated presented some triggering risk factor and that 75,4% of the mothers evaluated had a low level of knowledge about allergic rhinitis before the educational intervention. Once the actions were applied, an increase in knowledge about allergic rhinitis was achieved in the mothers of the selected children.
