Reading comprehension in English to develop competences in health professionals (Original)

Abstract

Reading comprehension is seen as the ability to understand a text, to learn the meaning of the words and to understand the context in its totality, to know what it is about, what it wants to transmit and the information it provides; all that, is considered essential for a competent performance of health professionals. The article presents the design of a system of actions about reading comprehension in English in order to develop professional competences in interaction with the social innovation of the intensive accompaniment in the training of these professionals. With the application of empirical, theoretical and statistical mathematical methods, primary information was obtained about the importance of reading comprehension in English for the development of competences in health professionals, its referents and theoretical foundations were systematized, specifying the scientific problem on how to contribute to the improvement of reading comprehension in English to turn it useful for the development of professional competences. An experience of social relevance and educational scientific quality in its conception was achieved, as well as reliability in its results, according to the pedagogical pre-experiment and the users' criteria.
