Abstract

Bats, in popular mythology, are considered beings of darkness, surrounded by mysteries and darkness. Lack of knowledge persists, generating fears and false beliefs towards a species that constitutes the second most diverse order of mammals, which are also important providers of ecosystem services and are suitable as biological indicators. Rejected and attacked by many people around the world, some species are in danger of extinction. Due to the value they possess, it is necessary to have precise tools to identify them, to deal with them in an effective and beneficial way for both humans and bats. This is the first contribution in the province dedicated specifically to identifying bat species at the University of Granma. The research was carried out at this center, with the aim of proposing a guide to identify bat species. For this, a bibliographic review was carried out. The areas with the highest concentration of the bat population were located, identifying for the first time two of the existing bat species on the premises of the university community. The study shows the lack of knowledge about the species on the part of workers and students. A preliminary summary document was prepared, based on the research carried out, which constitutes an applicable guide in other institutions and a useful tool to educate and train workers and students in our offices.
