Abstract

Spodoptera frugiperda (J.E. Smith) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) is the corn pest that causes the most damage to agricultural production, mainly in its larval stage, which is widely disseminated throughout various geographical world regions, and in this sense the search for ecological alternatives is growing to reduce its damage. The purpose of this research was to evaluate the insecticidal effect of three doses of neem foliar extracts (9.4; 7.5 and 5.6 cc) with a control of distilled water, on the survival of Spodoptera frugiperda larvae. The number of dead larvae was counted from 48 to 192 hours. Survival was evaluated by Kaplan-Meier and its associated statistics. The results showed that the highest dose of neem extract applied reached the lowest percentages of survival and the highest mortality at the end of the cycle. Among the survival probability functions of the four treatments, significant differences were found (p < 0.05) for the Mantel and Cox log-rank test. It is concluded that neem extracts have an insecticidal effect on pest larvae over time, making it an environmentally friendly alternative because they are natural biological insecticides, without residual effect and non-polluting.
