Antifascist thought in Manzanillo 1936-1945. Study notes (Revision)

Abstract

This article constitutes a result of a research project entitled “Cultural Identity and Local Development”, sponsored by the University of Granma. It is aimed at reflecting on the antifascist manifestations found in contemporary local publications of polemic issues, debates and personal criteria of outstanding thinkers from Manzanillo. It depicts the peculiarities of the Cuban way of thinking, largely characterized by its confrontation to neocolonialism and the search for Cuban genuineness. Consequently, the authors make a valuation of the antifascist thought in Manzanillo, in a period running from 1936 to 1945, during which radical feelings led the struggle against the  political, economic and social crisis that was affecting the local region, hardened by the influence of World War II, World Economic Crisis and the Spanish Civil War. They also  reflect on the presence of genuine Cuban feelings in the political manifestation of the local thougts, which reveal ethics, values and identity, and thus make local history and culture much more comprehensible. The theme in question provides a significant contribution to the study of the Manzanillo social thought and its identity roots, which stands as a remarkable component of the Social Sciences teaching-learning process.
