As information technologies advance, higher education institutions in Ecuador and other parts of the world demand that teachers and students use them in the classroom, to then be applied in the labor sector. It is important to consider that artificial intelligence is conceived in two ways: as the development of intelligent technological devices that serve as tools for professionals in the different applied fields of science, and as a phenomenon that reconfigures the way students and teachers of higher education learn and teach. Hence, we intend to delve deeper and reflect on the trends of artificial intelligence in higher education, on its contributions to meaningful, relevant and contextualized learning. In this whole process we can differentiate two moments of change in higher education by the hand of Artificial Intelligence. A first wave with the automation of administrative tasks and personalization of the learning and collaboration process; a second wave with the arrival of Artificial Intelligence in its generative version. Tools such as ChatGPT, Google Bard, Humata.ai or Sudowrite are quickly considered a benchmark for this technological advancement and are used massively by a large number of users. Therefore, it is concluded that the use of artificial intelligence undoubtedly creates competence in students and appears as a facilitating tool for teachers.
