Abstract

The university has the mission of preserving, developing and promoting the culture of humanity and in this sense it becomes the main agent of change to provide answers to the problems and challenges of sustainable development today. In the investigation, the objective was determined to propose actions for sustainable development from the work carried out with the sociocultural project directed by the Cacocum University Branch. It was based on the theoretical foundations that support environmental education, until reaching the most current conceptions that conceive the community context as an ideal scenario to promote it, with emphasis on its inhabitants. Research methods and techniques were applied that allowed verifying the existence of insufficiencies related to environmental education that the members of the "La Juanita" community in the Cristino Naranjo area must manifest for the sustainable development of the town. In the practical significance of the investigation, the sociocultural actions were determined to favor the environmental education of the inhabitants. The main results were aimed at offering flexible and easy-to-implement tools to strengthen the ecological awareness of those who inhabit the town, up to the demands demanded by today's Cuban society.
