Abstract

The information and communications society has reached great importance today, forming part of a technological culture with which we must live, since they allow us to develop our knowledge and exchange criteria with other people regardless of the distance. These information and communication technologies have had and still have a great influence on higher education as they constitute an important resource for carrying out an educational process focused on student self-learning. The appropriate use of Information and Communication Technologies (TIC) in the university environment is a debated topic, but not sufficiently studied due to its recurring nature. This article has the purpose of achieving a theoretical approach to such a complex and controversial issue. Among the findings, it stands out that these properly used technologies facilitate the work of the teacher and contribute to the cognitive development of the student; although it is necessary to continue the training of teachers; through strategies that seek the development of digital skills for both teachers and students.
