Research as the foundation of the management of university intellectual capital in knowledge societies (Review)

Within the framework of knowledge societies, the intellectual capital management is a key process in the generation of value and competitiveness for the different organizations, including university institutions in view of their teaching functions, investigation and extension are directly linked to two fundamental aspects of this process, such as the formation of human resources and, the generation of scientific knowledge. Under this direction, in this article discusses the role of research activities in the management of the intellectual capital of university institutions. Methodologically, the study was based on the review of specialized literature in the field of knowledge society and intellectual capital, emphasizing in the specific case of institutions of higher education. The conclusions of the investigation, demonstrate the need to consolidate the management of university intellectual capital through the strengthening of research processes, which in turn implies a rethinking of the traditional performance of university functions to promote a feedback of extension, research and teaching as a basis for an efficient management of the intangible assets that make up university intellectual capital.
