Abstract

The Phytoseiidae family is represented by 2 479 species, belonging to three subfamilies and 94 genera. The Caribbean region constitutes one of the world's biodiversity hotspots, points that identify the most important regions for the conservation of biodiversity. Cuba is not unfamiliar to this need and the first step to achieve this purpose is to know the species present. With this objective, under the protection of different research projects during the last 24 years, samplings were carried out to detect predatory mites of the Phytoseiidae family in agricultural crops, fruit trees, ornamentals, weeds and plants in natural spaces. The study covered nine municipalities in four western provinces of the country. 566 samplings were carried out on 84 botanical species, belonging to 31 families. Were processed 3 505 specimens of phytoseid mites, of which 35 species belonging to 19 types were identified. Of them, three types are reported (Africoseiulus, Arrenoseius = Fundiseius and Phytoseius) and seven new species for Cuba (Africoseiulus namibianus, Amblyseius silvaticus, Arrenoseius morgani, Neoseiulus gracilis, Neoseiulus longispinosus, Phytoseius pursegloveius and Phyburyi purseglovei). Amblyseius largoensis was the most frequent species (51.09%) and abundant (52.35%) and the one that was present in a greater number of host plants (28). 35 of the 53 species of phytoseid mites reported for Cuba were detected, which is evidence of the high diversity of the family.
