Evaluation of botanic composition and biomass production in grassland of Granma province (Original)

Abstract

The livestock in the eastern region of Cuba its develop in conditions of high temperature and scarcity of rains. The objetive of this work was to evaluated the botanical composition and biomass production in five grassland of Granma province with different management. The botanical composition was determined in 80 frames ha-1 by the Mannetje y Haydock` method, once time in each period rainy and few rainy, during the three years (2014-2017). The production of biomass was determined in 100 frames of 0,25 m2 by Haydock y Shaw`methodology. The biggest percents of pasture (grass and legume) was observed in “Cupeycito” and “Estación de Pastos”, which ranged between 87 and 92 %; while the lowest percents correspondind with to “Ojo de Agua”, where the values were about 50 %. In the grasslands “El Triángulo” y “El Progreso”, the arvenses and the nude soil showed similar percents, because of its influenced of equal form in the low covering of pasture observed. The biomass production was a significantly seasonal behavior. The biggest values were observed in grassland “Cupeycito” and “Estación de Pastos”, and were lower than 1,84 y 1,74 t ha-1, respectively. The rest of grassland showed an unfavorable condition. Its concluded that que en los pastizales “El Triángulo”, “El Progreso” y “Ojo de Agua”, the continuous grazing influenced in negative way on the biomass production and pasture covering; while in “Cupeycito” and “Estación de Pastos” the rotational grazing allowed better indicators.
