Abstract

To prevent diseases transmitted by mosquitoes, an alternative method is the use of plants, which represent a promising, safe and ecologically sustainable source for vector control. The objective of this work was to determine the level of knowledge of the population of the Municipality of Bayamo, about the use of plants as insecticide, for the control of mosquitoes in their different stages of development. A survey was carried out to determine how much is known about the plants for this purpose, which was applied mainly in the Antonio Guiteras, Jesús Menéndez and San Juan del Cristo neighborhoods, considering their high population concentration, as well as the presence of mosquito hotspots frequently in them and 228 people were surveyed. The plants that are used to control mosquito eggs and larvae are practically unknown and only 51.3% of those surveyed know of plants that serve to repel and kill adult mosquitoes. The Neem Tree (27.9%), Orange (17.6%), Basil (8.8%), Tangerine (7.4%) and Tobacco (5.9%) are the best known for this purpose, although they are not used. Products made from plants for mosquito control are known a little more, repellents (13.2%), candles (19.7%), incense (36.8%) and incense (76.3%). It was found that there are possibilities to grow plants in the study area for mosquito control, that very little is known about these plants, no one currently uses them, and there is more knowledge about the products.
