Abstract

Aim: To diagnose the professional development needs of sport event managers at Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) in Tete, Mozambique, regarding the planning and organisation of sports events. Methods: Exploratory-descriptive mixed-methods study with triangulation of four data sources: document analysis (10 institutional documents), a questionnaire applied to the entire target population of sport managers (n = 19), structured observation of 246 sports events, and semi-structured interviews with five sport management specialists. Results: Only 20% of institutional documents mentioned formal capacity-building initiatives; 42.1% of managers had never participated in professional development activities in the previous two years; infrastructure was considered adequate by only 15.8% of respondents; and only 36.6% of the 246 observed events presented adequate infrastructure. All five interviewed specialists agreed on the insufficiency of financial resources and the absence of systematic strategic planning. Conclusions: Sport event managers at HEIs in Tete face structural, technical, and organisational deficits, convergent across the four evidence sources, which compromise the quality of sports event management. The findings underpin the design of a professional development strategy, whose effectiveness is evaluated in a companion study.
