Grip Strength: Key to the Autonomy and Well-being of Older Adults

Grip strength is a key indicator of functionality and health in older adults, essential for their autonomy and general well-being. This physical attribute allows them to perform daily activities and directly influences quality of life and the ability to maintain independence. Various studies have shown that grip strength not only reflects muscle status, but is also associated with cardiovascular health, bone density and the risk of falls. A decrease in this capacity can be an early indicator of frailty, sarcopenia or chronic diseases, which increases the vulnerability of older adults. Likewise, grip strength is a simple and inexpensive tool to assess general health status, used as a predictive marker in clinical practice. Interventions aimed at strengthening this capacity, such as physical exercise and rehabilitation programs, have shown positive results in improving functionality and preventing disabilities. Promoting grip strength in older adults is essential to maintain their autonomy, reduce dependency and promote healthy aging, hence the importance of integrating preventive and therapeutic strategies that strengthen physical abilities and ensure a better quality of life during this stage.
