Methodological proposal for the use of Geographic Information Systems in the teaching of Geography (Original)

The Geographic Information Systems (GIS) are a geo-referenced database, designed to visualize, edit, manage and analyze geographic information. They constitute an important work tool for research and planning, both in the academic field and in spatial and territorial organization. In order to argue the introduction of this type of technologies in the teaching of Geography, the work addresses the main definitions regarding the essence of GIS, their characteristics and potential for teaching Geography. It offers a view of the topic on an international scale and its adaptation to the requirements of the Curriculum E of the Ministry of Higher Education of Cuba. A methodological proposal is included for the use of GIS in the teaching of Geography that was applied with the students of the 1st year of the Regular Day Course.
