Euthanasia and the right to life: a comparative analysis of Colombia and Ecuador (Review).

Abstract

This research addresses the issue of euthanasia from a legal and jurisprudential perspective, both Colombian and Ecuadorian, and seeks to analyze from these approaches, the legal reality of euthanasia against the right to a dignified life, conceiving the idea of dignity from birth to death of the person, as well as the right to decide freely and voluntarily. The option to end their existence in certain cases such as terminal illnesses that represent intolerable suffering and the inability of the subjects to fend for themselves, is a reality that also deserves to be analyzed in terms of dignity as a human right. Methodologically, this is bibliographic-documentary research with a qualitative and descriptive approach based on the inductive-deductive and comparative-historical methods. The main results are centered on the analysis of the Constitutional Court's ruling in relation to assisted death, to the cases in which it could be raised and urges to discuss the relevance of including this figure in the Ecuadorian legal system based on the results that have occurred in other regulations.
