The research analyzes the effect of the hydraulic retention period on the organic pollutant load of the wastewaters in the conditions developed by the facultative type oxidation lagoons, based on a physical model and taking into account the peculiarities of the city of Manta. The influence of the retention time on the biological and chemical oxygen demands, the hydrogen potential and the suspended and total solids is evaluated, in such a way to achieve the optimization of the design of facultative ponds, using non-linear programming, methods are used based on dispersed flow procedures for the evaluation of a lagoon system composed of a primary and a secondary facultative lagoon two meters deep. Eight case studies are analyzed in which the cost of the land, the use of partitions or deflectors are taken into account, varying the hydraulic retention time and the rectangularity in the lagoons and looking for the minimum of a cost function using non-linear programming. . To solve the problem, the calibration parameters obtained for the physical model are used, depending on the hydraulic retention time.
