Education is an essential integration tool for the formation of a culture for sustainable development, therefore, university processes should be oriented towards the training of professionals with relevance to become actively, reflexively and productively involved in the solution of environmental problems that have a negative impact on the sustainable development of organizations, institutions, communities and territories. The present work intends to contribute to the development of an education oriented towards sustainable development, taking advantage of the potentialities offered by reading as a didactic tool that facilitates the development and evaluation of the impact of the integral formation achieved, as an expression of the socio-professional relevance of university graduates. The experiment was developed with a sample of 46 first year students of the Bachelor's Degree in Social Communication of the University of Las Tunas, which made possible to verify the initial and final state of the soundness of the knowledge related to the identification of global and local environmental problems, the level of participation of students in the solution of local problems, in addition to the reading competence of these students, since reading development activities were implemented, aimed at achieving an environmental training in them, hence its relevance and importance.
