Abstract

This paper examines a group of sculptures that link animals with chess exploring its symbolic value and its role as cultural vehicle. Ten works have been identified performed between 1902 and 2025 in many regions of the world, and the analysis is focused in the relationships between its meaning and local traditions, moral values and ecological conscience. This study proposes that chess, in the interaction with the animal representation, becomes a narrative platform that amplify the confrontation between strength, cunning and virtue. In this way, the aim is to contribute to an interdisciplinary field of study that links arts, cultural anthropology and ludology.
