Proposal for a productive economic project in Mayarí: a local development initiative

Abstract

Local development initiatives efficiently utilize potential resources for self-development and take advantage of the effective conditions provided by local and business contexts, with the purpose of proposing solutions to existing problems. This article aims to propose a local development project that would favor the diversification of carpentry items made from waste generated by the timber forest industry in the municipality of Mayarí. The methodology was based on a mixed qualitative-quantitative study, using tools for the design of local development projects, specifically of the economic-productive project type. At the theoretical level, the inductive-deductive and historical-logical methods were employed; at the empirical level, participant direct observation, document review, and unstructured open interviews were used. Statistical methods allowed for the processing of the data obtained and the determination of the feasibility of the proposal. The main results consisted of theoretical aspects characterizing municipal initiatives based on their potential for local development, the diagnosis of the company, and the design of a proposal for an economic-productive local development project in the municipality of Mayarí. The proposal was considered economically, socially, and environmentally feasible, as it added value to sawn timber as the main raw material and efficiently utilized the potential resources that the business-government unit fostered in a participatory and innovative environment.
