Animal production and health in the Lavannaeu, Communal Section, Bejamin Locality, Sud-Est Department, Haiti

Abstract

The Lavannaeu commune, and more specifically the village of Béjamin, is characterized by a predominantly rural economy where agriculture and livestock farming are the main sources of family income. The objective of this study is to evaluate the characteristics of animal production and health in the village of Béjamin, in order to propose appropriate solutions for their improvement. The study was based on surveys and direct observations in Béjamin. Ten producers were surveyed. Field visits allowed for observation of the areas and the condition of the herds. Finally, a census of the cattle breeds present was conducted. Information on mortality and the main causes of death was collected. The main results show a total of 110 animals, with a predominance of females (50). The other categories include bulls and steers (40) and calves (20). Local breeds resistant to diseases and with the capacity to adapt to mountainous areas predominate. This livestock is generally used for meat production and, to a lesser extent, for milk production. The most common reproductive method is natural mating. Malnutrition and internal parasites are among the main causes of morbidity and mortality. It is recommended to improve feeding and forage conservation, as well as mineral supplementation; strengthen animal health with regular vaccinations and antiparasitic treatments; and improve reproduction through the selection of superior sires, the introduction of improved breeds, and the expansion of artificial insemination.
