Morphometric variations of the epidermis with non-melanoma malignant skin tumors in the province of Camagüey

Non-melanoma skin cancer is a significant public health concern due to its high incidence and the costs associated with its management. Early diagnosis through morphometric techniques can optimize resources and improve patient prognosis. However, few studies provide robust quantitative data on epidermal variations in these tumors, limiting their integration into routine practice. This study aimed to establish the morphometric variations of the epidermis in patients with non-melanoma malignant skin tumors treated at the "María Curie" Oncology Hospital in Camagüey from January 2022 to March 2024. An analytical observational study was conducted on 128 biopsies processed using paraffin embedding. Total epidermal height and the height of each stratum (except the lucidum) were measured using ImageJ software, and data were analyzed with SPSS. Results showed no statistically significant differences in total epidermal height between basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma. Nevertheless, the height of the corneal, granular, and spinous strata was greater in squamous cell carcinoma, whereas the basal stratum was thicker in basal cell carcinoma. These findings provide objective morphometric criteria that reflect the pathogenesis of each tumor type. They offer a quantitative complementary tool to conventional histopathological diagnosis and may open new perspectives for prognostic assessment in the clinical management of these patients.
