Acute diarrheal disease: A challenge for public health

Introduction: Diarrheal diseases are the leading cause of morbidity and mortality among children under five years of age, and acute diarrheal disease is one of the most frequent and severe illnesses affecting infants worldwide. Objective: To epidemiologically characterize diarrheal disease in the Municipality of Media Luna during 2025. Method: A descriptive, observational, cross-sectional study was conducted at the Raúl Podio Saborit Polyclinic in Media Luna during 2025. The sample consisted of 199 medical visits reported to the different services in the municipality that met the inclusion criteria of having three or more loose or liquid stools in 24 hours, and a duration of less than 14 days. Results: A 5.9% reduction in risk was observed compared to the previous year. The highest number of reported cases occurred in the third quarter of the year. Males predominated over females, with 104 cases (52.3%). 153 cases were reported in pediatric age groups (76.9%). The health area of the buildings presented the highest incidence rate. Drinking water quality is a significant environmental risk factor in its occurrence. Conclusions: The results of this study provide an epidemiological overview of diarrheal disease in the municipality, enabling the implementation of health programs to reduce the population's vulnerability.
