Abstract

Introduction: Neurodegenerative diseases are a heterogeneous group characterized by impairment of the central nervous system function, being Parkinson's the second most common neurodegenerative disease and the fourth most common neurological disorder, which highlights a group of motor symptoms that hinder the quality of life of patients with repercussions in the family and society, being the physical practice essential in their rehabilitation. Objective: To demonstrate the influence of the positive impact of the practice of Qigong in the therapeutic physical care of patients with Parkinson's disease, from the use of an alternative procedure of Qigong Baduanjin to improve motor manifestations. Materials and methods: the research is observational and pre-experimental in nature in a non-probabilistic purposive sample belonging to the Center for Research and Rehabilitation of Hereditary Ataxias, of 13 patients with Parkinson's disease, of mixed sex, aged between 55 and 80 years, between stages 1 and 2 according to the Hoehn-Yahr scale. Results: An alternative methodological procedure was provided. After three months at five weekly frequencies, improvements in motor symptoms were observed, reaching the category of moderate according to the Tinetti evaluation scale with an average score of 19.69 points in the category of moderate risk of falls. Conclusions: the application of statistical methods (Wilcoxon signed-rank test) showed that there is a significant difference between the measurements performed, inferring the positive effect of Qigong on patients with Parkinson's disease.
